The ultimate Carb - DomMINIque - 06-21-2016

Hello guys,

So I know this is a subjective topic but I was just curious to know what would the ultimate carb be for a 1275 a series?

I know of the following options:
SU HS4
SU HIF44
Weber.. no idea.

What's the pros and cons of each?
What is each ones ideal application?

HIF44 - power with fuel economy.

IDA48 - Power and kick ass looks as it pokes up through the bonnet.

It probably depends on what the "ultimate use" is.

Many people swear by the single 1 3/4" for good power with ease of tuning, economy may be better with a 1 1/2".

Twin 1 1/2" lovely with a race cam at full noise but may loose on torque lower in the rev range to the factory 1 1/4" setup.

Sidedraft Webers have great power, Dellortos similar. 40mm throats are preferred by some over the 45s for drivability.

Downdraft Webers are used by many car manufacturers to great effect. (I mean the common type, not IDA - forget those.)

Main issue with a few options is available space, and noise intrusion into the cabin.

If you can find a copy of Vizard's book on the Mini, or the A-Series to loan there is enough there to get you going with what you have, or what is local to you. Twin carb or other manifolds can be made if unavailable. Don't get too caught up with the exotic, the factory in the UK tried twin cam heads in the 70s but found that torque suffered. My personal wish is for a seven or eight port crossflow head with fuel injection coming in from the front, I guess we all can dream...

For those with money to burn, the Specialist Components BMW motorcycle twin cam head conversion when set up properly has an addictive sound, KAD Twin Cam similar.

I'll be running my twin FZD Dellortos on my GTS but failing that I'll be using my HIF44, I've run a 36DCD to great effect and in all honesty it's a lot easier to find someone locally that is willing to work on a Weber as opposed to what most of us have experienced when mentioning to a carb specialist that we have a SU and have been turned away purely by the fact that they don't understand the SU carbs, as stated by Andy above it'll all depend on what your required use of the motor will be, an HIF44 is extremely simple to work on once you've taken some time to understand the workings of them and can be one of the absolute best all round carbs available to us in terms of both economy and performance as the 44s CFM is equal to that of a 36DCD but with a better intake angle.

So now there is also the alternative as I understand it HIF6.
This is almost the same as the 44 is converted between imperial and metric.

Would a carb like this HIF 6/44 work on various applications with simply just the change of a needle?

Essentially, yes.

Needle, Jet (hole) and Spring can be changed. And then it can be modified a little further, but they are the basics.

Scrap yards may have one off a Jag or other car, and a 1 1/2" manifold can be opened up to suit of no other is available.
