Engine & subframe removal - Grant - 08-11-2016

I have finally gotten around to starting the rebuild of my mini. When I get a chance I will post some pics and details.

I am a couple of half days work in and have set aside this coming weekend to -
  • remove the engine (top out approach) through the bonnet with the help of some friends
  • drop the front and then rear subframes (complete with suspension, wheels, etc)

My idea behind this is to free the shell so it can be sent off for stripping, painting etc while I carry on working on stripping the subframes.

I just wanted to get thoughts on whether this is a reasonable approach of if it might be easier to strip the suspension with the subframes still attached.

From all the info I've red, the only real way to get the front rubber springs out/in is with the use of a special compression tool. Is this right and if so can anyone let me know where  get one of these?

You don't need a compression tool, you can remove the top control arm and this frees up the cone and donut assembly.

If you want to use a compression tool it is a rather simple and cheap device to make.
I made one using a length of threaded rod, a few nuts and big washers, and a section of 25x25 square tubing.

Malcolm can you post some pics of that compression tool.

Grant stripping the subframes is much easier out of the car so your plan sounds about right.

Make sure you have some beers in the fridge because that motor is kak heavy!

Thanks guys for the input. Two full days hard work and the engine and subframes are out. Could have take half that time if not for a stubborn gear extension rod roll pin.

And I concur Dom - that engine is heavier and more slippery than it looks. Luckily my folks' gardener is stronger than he looks (and my brother and I combined).
