Decoding Mini Chassis Numbers

I've found two pages which are pretty useful, the information is similar but not exactly the same. Both the links are for English built cars, so are only applicable to very early Minis.

If you're looking for chassis or engine tags (purely to get your old Mini looking smart you understand) here is the link. They sell the genuine rivets too, so you can keep things original, and shipping isn't a killer.

It's surprising that you can just order tags and rivets, I can think of situations where it might make life much easier...

That's for sure, I know a few years back when I ordered some from MiniSport I had to forward them a copy of my registration certificate and they reverse stamped them prior to shipping but on more recent years they've become a lot more relaxed on the situation.
