Had unpleasant surprise on Saturday while getting the Mini ready for the next race meeting. While changing the oil I found what looked like a tooth from a gear stuck to the magnet of the drain plug.

Initially after seeing that I thought... Forget the next race meeting I'm not stripping the engine again... But after a few minutes the desire of wanting to race out weighed all the effort of stripping and repairing the gearbox.

So once again out came the engine

The rear diff cover was removed to confirm what I suspected had broken

Pinion gear broken

Saturday evening I stripped the gearbox from the engine

Sunday the gearbox was stripped, cleaned, reassembled and fitted back to the engine.

All assembled and ready to go back into the Mini.

Monday evening the engine was put back in the Mini. Just a few small jobs to do before the next race and I hope this is the last time I have to do this until the engine refresh and check in December.

really sorry that this happened to you Dion. I do hope you can get Pampers fixed.

Ouch, that's a nasty one! Do you know what happened first? over revved and dropped a valve? or did the conrod give way first? looks like the piston was driven hard into the head chamber

Sorry for your loss, guess it is new engine time Sad

After a long wait I finally got all my engine parts back from the engineers. Some changes to the new engine compared to the old one. Using 1360 Hypatec Pistons instead of Omega and a new cylinder head.

Engine parts ready and waiting to be collected from the engineers.

Superb engineering done. Crack tested, wedged and nitrided crankshaft.
