The plate welded to the back of the rim is to strengthen the rim and where it mounts to the studs. Especially on the front driving wheels the non-plated wheels used to tear out of the studs and that was some serious problems for Leyland.

Own some minis, break them, fix them, improve them, test them to the limit....
