Yesterday I decided to drive around and try and find the right socket. Eventually, after a lot of phone calls and checking, I found it! The suitable socket

I wanted to see what the dust shields would look like in wrinkle black paint, and I think it looks pretty good.

One problem is that I couldn't and still can't split one of the dust shields. I think I might just hack off the nut and bolt and get new ones.
Finally, I got the ball joints correctly shimmed, torqued and the lock tabs folded. I fitted the steering arms and on one side I completed the assembly with everything torqued up, yay!

Final small update took the Mini to the person who did the bodywork for me to get the stripe fitted on the side
