So I've been working on the mini not too much has been happening but I'll share the pictures and progress anyways.
I want to get the breaks working so that when the car was going it would at least be able to stop. So I stripped the other subframe I had. Wanted to recon the master cylinders there so that I could basically just do a straight swop while still have a rolling chassis. So here are the photos: This is what prompted me to sort the breaks out. I'm going to do a complete swop out of both rear hub setup as these two are really horrible. ![]() Subframe Stripped: ![]() ![]() Suspension bits: ![]() Bits of bobs from the frame: ![]() One of the drums that I took off: ![]() ![]() Badly rusted brake cylinders: ![]() Then some of the subframe parts after a 2 day bath in vinegar. ![]() Was able to open one of the break cylinders. But can't get the other 3 open. So I'm going to try and pump them open with some brake fluid and see if that works. Otherwise replacement here we come.

This vinegar bath seems to really do the trick on old rusty and greasy parts. Seems like a cheaper solution than a lot more fancy acid dipping or sandblasting options.

I consider it acid dipping at home.
![]() The parts still need a further clean as part of the drying process they have a very thin layer of rust on them so I feel like a good clean and then something to "seal" the surface would be a good idea to make them look reasonable for a long time.

So not much has happened with this car for a while but slowly slowly I'm getting to some things.
Life is becoming a case of very little time, so getting done what I can with the money I'm earning that's taking up my time. Not the best job around but much neater than what it was before they went in to be recovered. ![]()

So my box of tricks had some bits for this car as well.
![]() So i took the head off the motor that came with the car. One of the intake valves had been left open and some water got into one of the bores. There is slight rust on the top of the piston and on the bore. However the piston still moves up and now in the bore. Based on thd fact that the block now needs to go into engineering and we can't gett 1100 pistons anymore I've opted for a different direction on this build. So in my box of tricks from the UK the following arrived: Evo water pump Slot drive turbo oil pump Hiff turbo rebuild/conversion kit Rear brake slave cylinders Unleaded valve seats. To be continued....

So I was of the opinion that the two cars on this thread were sperate but it seems that isn't the case.
From now on there will be a new thread for the blue bullnose as it is taking on a restore direction. It is a matching numbers car and I'm going to try as close as damn to get it to the perfect representation of what an 1100 special deluxe would have been when one fetched it new from the shop floor. The biggest issue with the blue shell is the giant holes in the floor. So even that car got a gift from Minispares. 2 brand new floors, left and right. So I've basically ended up with 2 projects on opposite ends of the scale with varying levels of work to be done to them.

That's very exciting! Nice to see that you'll be restoring it. Not too many of these mk3 roundnose shells ever get a proper restoration.

So bulletproof has ended up being the lucky shell for the turbo motor.
Some bits that have already arrived: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So in the above pic is the following items: Valve guides Cam followers Centre strap Unleaded inserts HIF44 turbo rebuild kit Duplex timing chain Water pump High capacity oil pump HT EVO Slot drive cam Gearbox gasket set 1275 +40 minispares "mega" pistons with ring set. Orange rated clutch diaphram Cam Bearings. Not in the picture but can be taken off the list: Head gasket (BK450) Full motor gasket set (no head gasket) So we getting there..... slowly but surely. Some pictures of a homemade plenum I found on the net which I think I'm going to attempt copying. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
