Avowed: A Step Toward The Outer Worlds 2 and the Thrills of an Immersive RPG - nigelbdhmp - 02-24-2025 Every time I sit down to play Avowed, there’s this odd sensation that nags at the back of my mind. I get immersed in the game, taking control of Dextral, the Aedryn Empire envoy, picking my squad, and venturing off on another adventure—likely heading into some dark cave. But amid the excitement, something keeps pulling me away from the moment. It’s not a complaint, more like a subtle observation. What I really want to be playing is The Outer Worlds 2. It’s a testament to Obsidian that Avowed has sparked this feeling, making me even more eager for The Outer Worlds 2 than I already was. I was excited for it before, but now the allure of returning to the vibrant, alive world of The Outer Worlds makes me yearn for it all the more. Avowed feels like a stepping stone toward that inevitable return to Halcyon, and honestly, I can’t wait for it to happen sooner rather than later. Honestly, I’m ready to move into Obsidian Entertainment’s HQ at this point—any way we can make that happen? That said, Avowed is a game I genuinely enjoy. I love it. The first few hours hooked me completely. I found myself thinking about it when I wasn’t playing, and the temptation to pull up Remote Play on my phone just to get a quick fix was real. I couldn’t wait to fire up my Xbox and dive back into the Living Lands. There was an addiction to it, for sure. So much to experience, so much to enjoy. And there’s no shortage of things to do. New settlements bring a flood of side quests, piling up like the bodies of defeated Xaurips. You take a deep breath, mutter, “Alright, I guess I’m doing this now,” and dive into the list. These side quests are an absolute joy. While the main campaign can be pretty serious, it’s a welcome relief to break off and tackle these quirky, often hilarious side stories. And by the end, they tie back together beautifully. If you're the type who tends to stick to the main quest, I get it, but trust me—don’t skip the side quests. You’ll find some of the game’s best content hidden in them. One quest, set in the desert region of Shatterscarp, has you standing guard while a soldier runs off to take a piss. Brilliant. There’s been a lot of chatter about Avowed’s RPG credentials. No, it’s not as deep as something like Skyrim. No, you can’t romance your companions—though I’m not sure that’s something you’d want to do here. And no, there’s no aging or idle chitchat with your teammates just because you’re bored. Where Avowed shines as an RPG is in the sheer amount of content it throws your way. As I mentioned, the side quests are plentiful, and each settlement has its own set of intriguing stories to uncover. You’ve got bounties to hunt down dangerous enemies, and the rewards are worth it—generous amounts of currency and powerful gear that you won’t find elsewhere. Boss fights feel rewarding, especially with the variety of weapons and armor that get tossed your way. While it might not reach the narrative depth of something like Baldur’s Gate 3, Avowed more than earns its place in the RPG family, and anyone who disagrees can feel free to voice their opinions. One of the most exciting aspects is how your decisions shape the world around you. As an Aedryn Envoy, you wield godlike powers, though which deity you serve plays a role in the narrative. Your actions, big and small, influence how NPCs react to you. Some are wary, others excited to have you around, depending on the choices you’ve made. It’s a nice touch to run into a random character 30 hours into the game who remembers that seemingly insignificant decision you made in the third hour. ![]() This move is part of Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to compete with other gaming platforms and enhance the Xbox experience across devices.
