Block preparation.

Valve clearances have been calculated based on the piston crown sitting 0.010” (0.25mm)
down the bore, therefore a trial build must be performed.
Standard head stud holes must be deepened to 1.100” (27.94mm). Use 3/8 UNC plug tap.
The “bent stud” holes do not require deepening.
The “bent stud” holes are the two outermost standard stud holes on the front of the block
(distributor side). To fit, screw into block then use a copper/hide mallet to bend out to
approximately 10 degrees from the vertical. Loosely fit head to check correct angle.
The block must be drilled and tapped to the eleven stud Cooper S pattern, the cylinder
head can be used as a template for marking the hole positions: drill and tap 5/16” UNC to a
depth of 0.700” (17.77mm), again use a plug tap to ensure maximum thread depth.
The standard oil feed hole to the rocker shaft in the rear right hand corner (water pump
side) must be sealed. Drill and tap M8 and use the M8 grub screw supplied with thread
sealant to fully seal the hole. The cylinder head uses an external oil feed via a pipe from
the pressure switch drilling on the front of the block.
The oil return from the cylinder head is internal, via the pushrod holes (2&3, 6&7). The tops
of these should be counter sunk and the holes in the head gasket should be elongated to
ensure free passage for the oil. Check both block, gasket and head before fitting.
*This is only required on earlier spec heads where the gasket may impede oil draining. It is at the discretion of the engine
builder to decide whether there is sufficient cross section area available for the oil drain. This depends on the amount
skimmed off of the head
