It took me almost 4 months to convince him to sell it to me, as someone from the UK was about to buy it and export it there, unfortunately that deal fell through due to the whole Covid issue and that meant, i was able to purchase it from the buyer. It is a family owned car, the brother bought it new in 1971 and then the previous owner bought it from him in the 80's.

Unfortunately the interior isn't original and back in the late 90's it had a blow over in paint. The bootlid needs replacing as it has a lot of body filler on it that over the years, started cracking.The engine bay is quite original, but unfortunately had suffered a blown head gasket, so that was the first thing that got some attention.

 I changed the head, the carb was just given a proper clean, replated screws and a new spindle and service kit was put it. For now just want to get it running nicely again.

I've managed to find a NOS MK! bootlid replacement, as in SA they came out with a MK1 bootlid and not a clubman one, still unsure i want to use it though. Still has the sticker from supplier.

Next is new tires to be fitted hopefully this week and then I'll take it for a drive around to see if it all in order.

The day it was fetched :

It's a 1967 model, thus has the Australian type doors. It's been fitted with a later 99H type 1000cc at some point. Generally a good vehicle, with no rust or body damage. It does, however, need some mechanical work, which I'll get into shortly.

The first day it was back, it had the original company stickers from the mid 90s put on, along with some new tyres :

Already had it on the hoist and found some prior repairs/maintenance that were rather 'interesting'. Having looked through the vehicle, pretty much the entire braking system has to be replaced. New parts have already been ordered and received. Will hopefully be getting stuck into this vehicle shortly.

Managed to get an earlier and original steering wheel to replace the sporty one that's in there currently. There is a crack under the centre badge, but overall, not bad. Considering how hard they are to find here in SA, I'm happy :

I'm now at the point of doing some work, so she's on the ramp ready for some love and attention :

Made a start on the repairs today. I'm starting with the rear suspension and brakes as this seems to be less intensive than dismantling the entire front end.

This vehicle has really had some questionable maintenance done in the past, especially on the braking system. The rubber hoses look to be the original items; if not, then they're really old replacements. Left rear has perished and started to leak in the last couple of weeks, while there is a mix of brake shoes and cylinders - real backyard mechanic work. This picture shows the use of front shoes on the rear, with a leaking cylinder, among other things :

Stripped out the suspension on both sides at the rear. The radius arms are at the engineers for new repair kits to be installed, while I make a start on cleaning and painting some of the remaining items :

Made a little bit of progress today. The rear back plates have been built up with all new parts. The only items not replaced were the hand brake levers - still in good condition. So nice being able to deal with new parts :

I've also refurbished the rear hubs with a lick of paint, some new studs and wheel nuts and new Timken taper roller bearings. The bearings that came out were still the ball-bearing type and had certainly seen better days, especially on the left side, which had absolutely no grease in it :

I acquired my 1975 Clubman on the 23rd of July 2018, as always the car was advertised saying 90% of it is there and "just needs to be put back together". Well , spoiler alert it wasn't. Went to go and look at the car a few times, heard the engine run, checked the usual place for rust spots to usually accumulate, and surprisingly it seemed like i found a mini with almost zero rust on it ( the only spot that there is a bit of rust/pitting is next to the battery box). However, the radiator was shot, the wiring harness had been cut out of the car, no alternator or battery and a fairly important one too.. no brakes.

There are positives though.. the car had been given a heart transplant in the means of a 1275 Gts 11 stud head motor, fairly decent paint job, new interior and as i mentioned almost zero rust. 

So after a bit of money gathering and speaking to my elders, at the tender age of 19 years old i obtained my 1st classic car that i can work on(which has been a dream for the last few years of my petrol headedness life) and own.

Here are a few pictures of what the car looked like when i went to go and look at it.

After we picked it up i decided to take it outside and give it a good clean, it looked quite a bit better than before.

So it obviously has quite a bit of potential, another thing i noticed about the mini is that mine is one of the few leyland minis that still has all the plates from the factory. A nice surprise. 

Since shes been in my possession, i have completely re-wired the car from front to back, and being my 1st car that i have ever worked on doing a wiring harness is no easy task, that i can tell you right now. However with the help of a few downloadable original manuals with wiring diagrams and updated colour coded diagrams, alot of cursing, learning and coffee i have successfully re wired the clubby.
Im still so surprised how i did not burn our house or our barn down because myself and fire have an extremely good relationship as any young boy and fire does. haha.

I decided that mounting the hella spots on the grille was not a good idea so i ended up making my own brackets that slide under the grille and work like a charm.

So i know that there are quite a few lights on my mini but i thought that i can always take them off if i need to so that is pretty good.

i also noticed that mounting the spot lights (Hellas) on the grille was not the most intelligent i have ever done in my life ( definitely not the 1st lol ) so i decided, instead of paying some stupid price for a bracket on mini sport. I just made my own and here is how they turned out to be.

Time to stop lurking and start posting more.
I yesterday closed the deal on a small, yellow 1100 Clubman ( https://i.imgur.com/zN9EFLE.jpg ).
I cannot remember it's age or much else about it's history other than I'm the 3rd owner, yesterday is a bit of a blur.

So I actually went to go look at a 1275, but there was more work left on it than I had money for. Fortunately for me, the guy had a second mini he bought off his supervisor (original owner), and then finally settled for me taking that off his hands.

Now comes the tricky part for me;
-The brakes are terrible (got a master cylinder brake repair kit with). I'll upgrade to disks in future.
-It's not gone through roadworthy in recent years.
-I'm told the license is paid but not issued because of road worthy certificate is missing (But I do have the papers and 1 plate on the back)
-The entire engine bay is coated in soot and petrol from a hole in the exhaust somewhere, suspected the manifold from a flexing engine and many years of use.
-Interior needs to be addressed, but no rust on the floor pan
-Aged window rubbers, probably needs replacing after a respray
-Surface rust in multiple places, so I'm hoping to get a quote on having it sanded, treated and resprayed.
-Might have to replace the bonnet, the left side (facing the car) is very rusted
-It has a racing steering wheel, I'll probably swap that out as well.

My plans/priority order:
-Fix brakes
-Get it through roadworthy and apply new license plates (and pray that the license actually has been paid for)
-Get insurance and a tracker
-use it until I get time to take the engine and seats out, have everything cleaned off and the shell given rust treatment and a fresh coat of paint.

I'll take some more pictures tonight after work and upload tomorrow morning.]]>
