  DIY donut compressor
Posted by: theMINIguy - 08-14-2016, 01:33 PM - Forum: Technical Queries / Questions - Classic Mini - Replies (1)

Dom asked me to post pics of my home made rubber spring compressing tool so here it is.

200mm of 25x25 square tube
400mm of M14 threaded rod (you'll need 1/2" UNF imperial thread for pre 1976 cars)
2x nuts
3x large washers

Make sure the tubing is cut perfectly square at both ends.
Weld a washer to each end.
Weld one nut to the end of the threaded bar and Bob's your aunty.

Lubricate nut to prevent binding.

  Boot Lock
Posted by: Esteban - 08-11-2016, 04:58 PM - Forum: Technical Queries / Questions - Classic Mini - Replies (1)

Hi.
Does anybody know what goes between (14) boot handle assembly and (16) boot handle to boot seal.
Mine was rusted solid and sent it to the locksmith to enable the key to work R195.
Now that I see the lock mechanisim I am sure there must be a plastic sleeve or is it simply grease?

  Engine & subframe removal
Posted by: Grant - 08-11-2016, 07:34 AM - Forum: Technical Queries / Questions - Classic Mini - Replies (5)

I have finally gotten around to starting the rebuild of my mini. When I get a chance I will post some pics and details.

I am a couple of half days work in and have set aside this coming weekend to -

  • remove the engine (top out approach) through the bonnet with the help of some friends
  • drop the front and then rear subframes (complete with suspension, wheels, etc)

My idea behind this is to free the shell so it can be sent off for stripping, painting etc while I carry on working on stripping the subframes.

I just wanted to get thoughts on whether this is a reasonable approach of if it might be easier to strip the suspension with the subframes still attached.

From all the info I've red, the only real way to get the front rubber springs out/in is with the use of a special compression tool. Is this right and if so can anyone let me know where  get one of these?
