Tongue 1380 Clubman

Well, this car has a rather interesting history. Basically, my dad bought and rebuilt the car in the '90s, before selling it and moving on to another Mini. She was bought by someone locally, who then sold it to another local. This guy used it for many years, before selling it on as well. My dad was approached about a Mini being for sale one day and when he went to view it, there stood his former car. She had been used for illegal goings on and had been impounded. My brother bought the car and did some work.

This is how she looked when got her back :

The car was badly faded and had had a rear shunt at some point. Solid overall, but needing some TLC. My brother did a bit of work to the car, including fitting the 40 Weber, GTS steering wheel, LCB, new exhaust system and giving it a good clean out. He was going to fit 13s and fully rebuild it, but a certain turbo Clubby came up and this car went on the back burner. Long story short, my mom acquired the car and we'll now be fixing it up for everyday use.

A set of 7.5" discs will be going on, along with some genuine D1 wheels. It'll get some attention to the bodywork, including a respray in a different blue, wheel arches, some stickers and a fibreglass bonnet. The 40 Weber will probably come off in place of a 36DCD.

Some random shots as of recently :

The wheels :

The bonnet :

The engine, with 11 stud head (no clue of GTS or not) and inefficient airbox for the Weber :

She'll be getting some updates as and when we can afford to do them, as well as when we have the time. This is the third project car on the property now, so it should be entertaining.

  Old skool Rover Sport
Posted by: Francois - 03-03-2016, 08:45 PM - Forum: Your Classic Minis Story - Replies (33)

2nd time round on this build thread but I would like to keep a detailed record so here we go!

It all started many years ago when I was young and still had hair. Some would argue a much better attitude as well!! [Image: biggrin.png]

I was in my second year studying architecture in Pretoria and joined what became two very good friends in a lift club to and from university. Long story short; Dalmain had a mk1 998 and the rest is history. I bought and restored a mk2 998 Cooper on a student budget - yes took me even longer than my current Rover!

Fast forward a couple of years and I return from the Middle East and Europe with a better half (much worse half she turned out to be but that is entirely another story). Twin boys were born; some of you know Jared and that spelt the end of the Mini. Can't have twins and man toys, so she said.

Fast forward once more and Jared is 14 years old; master of the iPad, Ipod, Xbox etc, but did not have a clue how to fasten or loosen a bolt, so we bought a Mini!!

It's a joint project, sort of, creating a Rover Mini Sport look alike but with all old skool mechanics under the bonnet consisting of;

1275 GTS engine, lightened, balanced, center main strap, 649 cam (original type), flowed and ported big valve 12G940 head, Hif44 carb.
