Considering that all mini literature talks about the 1098 in terms of the UK version, I thought we could create a 1098 thread purely based on the technical info and possible mods that can be effectively done to the South African version of the A series 1098.
I barely have enough knowledge to make myself dangerous so if some of the resident experts please contribute it would be much appreciated.
What I know:
Engine number prefix 10H - 1098cc
Block is the same as the 1275, with the same bore.
The SA 1100 has a shorter stroke to the 1275 (not sure what it is exactly)
Some other things that could be added:
What standard SU carb the 1098 came out with
Is their any potential with the SA 1098
Performance upgrades to the 1098 in terms of ease and cost
At what point is it time to move to a 1275
Other tell tale signs that you have 1098 parts (Piston differences, conrods, anything else)
The 1098 vs 1275 and which is better for your objective (Full race car vs daily driver)

I got a 1962 MK1, Its been almost 6 years, progress is slow but one day when i grow up I should be done. Currently I have a 1100cc engine with "magic wand" gear change, single leading discs all round and a fuel gauge that's either half or empty.
When I got it:
And where I'm at now:
Although since these were taken I have done more to the interior and Put it back on the road.
I'm Abri. I got my first mini in 2005 but I wanted one long before that. I live in Cape Town and am an active member of the Cape Town Mini Owners' Club. My mini history is as follows, starting with the latest and going back to the first:
1967 Morris Cooper S 1275
1963 Morris 850 Standard
1967 Austin Cooper S 1275
1967 Austin Cooper S 1275
1975 Leyland Mini Deluxe 1098
1981 Leyland Clubman 1275 E
1965 Austin Mini 850
1974 Leyland Mini Deluxe 1098
1975 Leyland Mini Deluxe 1098
The most minis I've ever owned simultaneously was four, but it was too painful to let them sleep outside in the wet Cape Town winter, so I reduced it to three. Since about 2010 I've progressively become more interested in Mk1s.
no papers, old owner lost them, licencing says its pending scrapping so im assuming theres penalties involved, engine is stuff from standing too long, needs a rebore and new pistons, but its all there, head, carbs etc, think only the starter is missing. body is fairly solid, only major spot I saw was left door sill other than that is solid. seats are there too, exhaust etc, basically it was a running car that over heated and then just parked off and never touched again, my mate bought as junk as the lady wanted it off her property hence no efforts on getting any papers were made. I do not have the heart to strip it eventhough I could probably get a lot more stripped, car is too complete and deserved to be saved. 4000 neg, car in in Pietermaritzburg.
Hi all.. getting back to modelling again now that the kids have grown up abit and i have more time for me again. Im no where near a pro and learning alot as i go on.
currently building the Mk1 998cc, however seeing that that are inconsistancies on colour and a few parts ill be doing a custom building, so telling me its all wrong and should be that color will fall on deaf eyes. i have the 1275 S rally aswell waiting after this build but for now lets start..
so i only started taking photos after the engine and clutch housing where stuck together... coloured the motor with XF5 matt green. then used brown and black to roughen it up abit for a more aged look... the distributor measures 8mm long. ill be finding abit of network cable or something small to replicat the HT leads as the kit has not got that.
What do you think about getting some stickers made to advertise our forum? Maybe someone artistic can incorporate the web address into the logo and we can stick this maybe on the rear window, something not too big and discrete.......?
