  Spotted way back in 2013
Posted by: ChristiaanV - 08-23-2017, 11:55 AM - Forum: Spotted - Replies (2)

I was suddenly reminded that I had taken pictures of a Mini in the Southern Suburbs Cape Town a few years ago, so I am curious if anyone has seen this one before or not.
I'll leave a link for the rest of the pictures (3) in higher quality.

During college I walked past it a few times but that was 4 years ago, also sad I didn't take more pics.

  LOOKING FOR LONG LOST MINI
Posted by: Classicman - 08-18-2017, 12:25 PM - Forum: Introduce Yourself - No Replies

Hi Guys

Thanks for the add.

Around 2008/2009 I bought a one owner 1966 Austin Mini panelvan and used it for my sideline business in PE.  After about a year, I sold the vehicle to a guy in East London who then apparently sold it onto Cape Town.  I removed the Autoglym details before I sold her.

I would desperately like to find the old girl and try and buy her back.  My daughter was about 2 or 3 and really loved the van.  She would play in the back in the garage for hours and never wanted to come out.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of this van or the owner.  Please can you put me in touch with them.  Photos attached.

  Hi All - Newbie
Posted by: MDG - 08-15-2017, 07:23 PM - Forum: Introduce Yourself - Replies (7)

Hi All

I'm Mark from South Africa. About 11 years ago, my dad and I started to rebuild a 1962 mini cooper 998. Sadly the project came to a holt about 8 years ago after we had put in 2 years of work due to a guy respraying only the roof. I had sprayed the entire car, but had difficulty spraying the center of the roof. So we were advised of a spray painter and he ended up messing the entire car, respraying not only the roof, but the body too and leaving behind orange peel and poor finish. My father passed away 3 years ago and I am restarting the project in honour of him.

Monies are a little tight and will do it slowly.

I am actually hunting down a book in which my dad made notes on all the modifications we made. I cannot remember what size we bored the engine too. It was a 1275, and have a feeling it is now around a 1320........? Balanced motor with again, I think a 731 cam......?

Initially we were going to take it back to complete original condition, but after reading John Parnell's book and working out the costs, it was too expensive. So we finally decided to make it our own.

The journey will be a long one and getting parts from the UK very expensive, but I am looking forward to the hard work and final result.

Some of the early pictures. Sadly it doesnt look this good in real life.

Good morning from a sunny Cape Town!

I'll try to keep this short; Recently I had a car (1996 Fiat Uno Fire, my dad's) stolen while visiting a mate in Rondebosh last month, so I've been looking around at alternatives and through the many years of my dad's stories I'm also looking at getting a Mini as my first car.

Now I am fortunate enough to have a few project builds being scrapped in the Western Cape that I'm looking into getting my hands on, and I don't shy away from grease up to my elbows, but with this all said I'm hoping for some quick advice I didn't get searching the forums (Guess I'm just blind but I'll keep looking).

1. Who do I stay away from when looking for mechanical parts? (tell me your best and worst experiences with things like filters, seals, radiator pipes, window glass, etc)
2. I do plan to have conversion kits installed i.e. the best brakes I can afford, a Weber carb kit, maybe a MP3 radio system someday. Where do you source your mods from?
3. Chances are its a long term plan, but I intend to convert to a metal-free petrol engine by having hard seat inserts for the valves inserted, I read that it is expensive but it keeps the valves from wearing out faster. Would anyone recommend this, or should I just keep buying LRP while I can?
4. What did you learn with your Mini that you wished someone would have told you about? I take a lot of information in my head for granted because I forget not everything about cars are common knowledge.

Lekker dag verder!
