Ok

So this is how the minion project started. It was way back in 2014 where me and my father got this idea of doing a project car for our self and for car shows (there are hardly any here LOL)

We both decided to get a lil mini . I browsed the internet daily looking for a bargain (as we all do). In September 2014 I found this lil guy all stranded in a guy’s garage in Bloemfontein. He had this mini for a good couple of years who then sold it to a lady who drove the mini for 3 years, then eventually messed up the motor and vehicle had also been bumped in the front. She then sold it back to the previous dude who originally had it and he wanted to make a project of his old mini that once belonged to him. That’s where I came into the picture; he never had the time or money to get "MINION" back to her glory and advertised her on gumtree. Deal done R4500 cash and I fetched her in Bloem on 26 September 2014 .
I was i proud owner of a mini .

Then the fun and games started . I knew nothing about minis or models or anything LOL. Took her back home the Sunday me and my father stripped her completely just leaving suspension in and tyres .

After a good couple of months i joined the CPT mini club and then Durban , that made life so easy guys always willing to help as i knew nothing .

Long storie short , loving every moment i see a change in my car .

Hope you guys like my build , hope to meet yo guys and your cars soon .

Then mechanics stripped the suspention for me .

After that i took the shell and some of her parts to get sand blasted removing all the old paint and it made it easier for us to see what we dealing with . Luckily she wasn't to rusted

After sand blasting we sprayed her with red oxcite to prevent rust getting on body while we working on the body .

  Best oil for the A-Series
Posted by: Boyscout - 01-20-2016, 02:09 PM - Forum: Technical Queries / Questions - Classic Mini - Replies (31)

Like most Mini enthusiasts, I want to be sure that my Mini engine gets the best lifeblood. I am quite passionate about oils and have done extensive research on the best oil for the A-Series. The Mini engine is quite a unique animal in that it shares its engine oil with the gearbox. This coupled with the fact that it still employs a "flat tappet" valve train makes it require an oil which has high levels of ZDDP. (Zinc dithiophosphate)

Now older oils had ZDDP in abundance and it was never a problem. Now modern cars with catalytic converters do not like high levels of ZDDP as it blocks the cat. Most modern oils have had the ZDDP content greatly reduced to comply with CAT specifications.

If you use oil specifically made for Classic cars it usually does have a high enough ZDDP content as well as some of the racing oils, Indy oil is one. I also found that the classic oils have a viscosity of 20W50 which is really thick when cold. This is not ideal as you would like to get it circulated as soon as possible and an oil with a lower cold (W) rating would be more suitable.

I have tried a number of oils and to date I can not find anything better (IMHO) than Caltex DELO 400. This oils is made for Diesel but is also applicable to mixed fleet. It has adequate levels of ZDDP so the gearbox and the tappets (not the ones driving the car Smile ) will be happy. It also has a viscosity of 15W40 so it circulates better. Even though it is classified as a mineral oil the specs exceed many full synthetic oils.

I have been using Delo 400 for a while now and have found that the oil pressure is more consistent from cold to hot and the engine is generally smoother. The gear shift is also slightly better. Previously I had a scratchy shift into 2nd gear with Castrol GTX and GTX High mileage. After a while when the oil was up to temp it was better. With the Delo it is fine from cold.

It is also not very expensive, you can buy it from Midas and Makro for less than R300 per 5l bottle

 https://www.makro.co.za/diy/caltex-5l-motor-oil-2874EA currently on special.

http://www.caltex.com/za/products-and-se...ants/delo/

You want the Delo 400 multigrade , not the gold or the LE.

I am also looking at some of the oils from the Motul range as they also produce excellent lubricants, this one in particular

  Media Blasting
Posted by: theMINIguy - 01-20-2016, 09:29 AM - Forum: General Chit Chat - Replies (6)

For those who are looking for an easy and relatively cheap way of cleaning parts, media blasting is an option.

Required hardware:

  • Air compressor
  • Face mask
  • Respirator
  • Sandblast gun
  • Optional dust overall
I experimented with two types of media, namely sand and Sodium Bicarbonate.

30kg bags of sandblasting grit are available from Adendorff at R75.
I sourced a 5kg bag of Soda from a bulk catering supply shop for R80, but i'm sure you can find it cheaper from a more industrial source.

Sand is much more abrasive and is best suited for steel and cast iron.
Bicarb is much less aggressive and can be used to clean softer metals like aluminium and pewter.

The media is reusable whichever material you are using. I worked inside cut in half 25 gallon drum in an attempt to "catch" as much of the media as possible.
But be warned, the dust goes everywhere!

Here are two examples; lower control arms I blasted with sand, and a pair of Weber side drafts that I soda blasted.

Does it make sense to use a mini as a daily driver
Posted by: Vinay-RS - 01-19-2016, 07:29 AM - Forum: General Chit Chat - Replies (14)

So this forum has been relatively quiet so I decided to create a thread on a topic that I've heard conflicting views about:

Does it make sense to use a mini everyday to get you to and from work in traffic (or motorway driving) and do you use your mini(s) daily. Does it make the commute to work more interesting and fun, or more stressful and tiring?

I'll start: I typically don't drive everyday so I don't know much about how a mini is to drive everyday in traffic, although I've started using the mini more regularly.
